With his solo performance for a staggering 4000 people in Johannesburg last Friday, award winning entertainer, Barry Hilton, has cemented his position as the country’s biggest selling resident comedian.
In an arena set-up usually reserved for rock bands or pop concerts, the hilarious Hilton was completely surrounded on a center stage. Such a theatre-in-the-round removes the fourth wall and brings a performer into the same space as his audience, allowing for the strong and direct engagement this seasoned comedian is famous for.
The audience erupted in applause as Barry stepped onto the stage to the beat of ‘Here Comes the Hotstepper’. Almost two hours later, there was not a dry eye in the house – thousands were crying with laughter, thousands more couldn’t breathe and all were wheezing and doubled over with laughter. With just the right combination of his latest material and a few fan favourites, Barry was on fire. He had his appreciative audience convulsing and clutching their sides while begging for more.
“It’s always impressive when a stand-up comedian commands a crowd, but it’s especially impressive when it’s happening in an enormous, sold-out venue such as the Big Top Arena at Carnival City,” says entertainment director Matthew Cook. “A huge arena like this is almost impossible to work to a comic’s advantage – the energy has to be dialed so high to get the crowd going that no other SA based comedian has succeeded with a solo show in the space.”
